In 1914, an Irish unit was raised in Johannesburg, which was known as the South African Irish Regiment.

After taking part in putting down an internal Afrikaner rebellion during 1914, the Regiment took part in the campaign in South West Africa (Namibia) before returning to Cape Town where it was demobilised in July 1915 and formally disbanded in 1920.
